Podolski retires at 40- and becomes owner of Polish club!

Latest from Your Site News' Lyall Thomas:

Lucas Podolski has retired from football age 40 and become the owner of Polish club Gornik Zabrze.

He just led Gornik Zabrze to the Polish Cup - their first trophy in 38 years - last weekend and they finished runner's up in the Polish league.

The ex Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Germany great has followed his last game by acquiring the 86 per cent majority share-hold of the club.

He said on LinkedIn: "Thats it. My last game.

"I can only thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Im lost for words today This goodbye is incredibly hard for me, because I loved this game and the time with you fans with all my heart.

"For me, football was never just a job, it was always pure love, passion, and hard work on the streets and in the stadium.

"A huge thank you to my family, my friends, my teammates, and the whole staff in the offices behind the scenes.. Thank you for this amazing surprise and this unforgettable day.

"And above all, thank you to you the fans. You are unbelievable! To be able to close the circle right here means everything to me. It was an honour. Yours, Poldi. 10"

Podolski was born in Poland but moved to Germany, with whom he won the 2014 World Cup, when he was two-years-old.

Notts County release three after play-off triumph

Notts County have released their retained list following their promotion to Sky Bet League One last weekend.

Keanan Bennetts, Jack Hinchy and Ollie Norburn will leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of June.

Tyrese Hall, Tom Iorpenda, Jayden Luker and Harald Nilsen Tangen will return to their parent clubs.

The club has confirmed it has made contract extension offers to Lewis Macari and Rod McDonald.

Dundee Utd sign Tait

Dundee United have signed midfielder Dylan Tait on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old former Raith Rovers and Hibernian player has agreed a three-year contract after turning down a new deal with Falkirk.

United manager Jim Goodwin said: Dylan is a player weve admired for a long time and somebody we believe is perfectly suited to the way we want to play.

There was significant interest in Dylan from elsewhere, so were naturally delighted hes chosen Dundee United for the next stage of his career."

'Gordon's versatility and CL form attracted Barcelona'

Your Site News' Keith Downie:

"What's interesting is the two clubs who were fighting for his signature are from the continent - Barcelona and Bayern Munich - and I think a lot of that would be down to what he's done in the Champions League this season.

"Only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane scored more goals than Gordon's 10. It's a brilliant return. In that competition, his numbers have been sensational. His numbers haven't been quite as good in the Premier League.

"Yes, he scored six, taking his total to 17 which, on paper, looks good. But clearly his best form this season has been reserved for the Champions League.

"He can play a number of positions, too. Ordinarily, he's played off the left-hand side in a 4-3-3, but he's also been used a lot through the middle, to devastating effect at times.

"Barcelona have got an abundance of riches, with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Robert Lewandowski is leaving, so perhaps that provides an opening for him through the middle. That ability to play in a number of positions is the thing that has attracted Barcelona.

"He's got blistering pace, he scores all sorts of goals and he's improved greatly as a Newcastle player since arriving from Everton. He's 25, he's an England international and I can see him fitting into the lifestyle over there, the style of football.

"Newcastle fans will be disappointed they are losing one of their star players, however I think it's easier to take losing him to Barcelona than it would have been if they were to have lost him to Arsenal, who were interested, and Liverpool, who almost signed him two years ago."

Arsenal owners planning new contract for Arteta

Arsenal's Kroenke family owners have confirmed plans to offer manager Mikel Arteta a new contract as an "utmost priority".

Yeovil sign midfielder from Doncaster

Yeovil have announced the signing of Zain Westbrooke from Doncaster.

The 29-year-old midfielder was released by the Sky Bet League One club after the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.

He returns to the National League, where he spent the bulk of last season on loan at Scunthorpe.

Gillingham confirm Brophy capture

Gillingham have announced the signing of James Brophy.

The 31-year-old winger has signed a two-year deal at Priestfield after leaving Cambridge.

Brophy missed just eight league games across five seasons at the Abbey Stadium and helped the club to promotion from Sky Bet League Two in 2025/26.

Kroenke: We have foundations to dominate after waking 'sleeping giant' Arsenal

In a rare media appearance ahead of Saturday's Champions League final, Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke reveals untold stories of the club's transformation from 'banter era' and fan protests to Premier League champions with plans to build a trophy-winning dynasty.

Carlisle appoint Hughes' successor

Carlisle have moved swiftly to appoint a new head coach after the departure of Mark Hughes earlier today.

Rob Elliot has signed a rolling contract at Brunton Park and will start work on Friday.

The 40-year-old former Newcastle and Charlton goalkeeper had two spells in charge of Gateshead either side of a 33-game spell at Crawley.
